Macedonian Energy Brigades are coordinated by Proaktiva. The NGO was set up in the 2001 from members previously active in MARS. The organisation is lead by young environmentalists who sought ways to protect the environment and build civil society in Macedonia. Among other project are participation in Bankwatch, participation in and development of social and humanitarian projects. In the summer of 2000 current EB members participated in a REReP seminar, organised by Friends of the Earth International, on which the Bulgarian Energy Brigades were introduced. On that basis it organised a needs assessment visit for Macedonian Energy Brigades by representatives of the International Energy Brigades Network. As a result Macedonians decided to join the Network and start to organise Energy Brigade work in Macedonia.

Although Proaktiva is a young organisation, it developed a sufficient level of experience to be able to start the professional work and necessary structures needed for successful Energy Brigade work. Proaktiva is supported by Milieukontakt Oost-Europa through training and councelling on their institutional development of the organisation, and financially on their Bankwatch activities for the years 2000 and 2001.
